Mike & Gareth Pledge M4 Relief Road

Newport Conservatives - Tuesday, April 27, 2021
Mike & Gareth Pledge M4 Relief Road

M4 Motorway Tolls, Congestion Charging, Workplace Parking Charges, Closing Motorway Junctions.

The Senedd Election on 6th May is the most important election Newport has faced in years. This election will determine the shape of our City for years to come.

Some of the proposed alternatives to the M4 Relief Road have been heavily criticised and labelled as 'barmy' by the Newport Conservatives Senedd Candidates. We need to vote Labour out of Newport.

Some of the proposals include:-

“Motorway Tolls or Congestion Charging”

Page 53 of the final report from the South East Wales Transport Commission states “we are in favour of a comprehensive UK wide, pay-per-mile Road User Charge system.” They go on to say “In the long-term, a properly designed UK wide RUC system would increase the effectiveness of the recommendations in this report.”

“Workplace Car Parking Charges”

Page 54 of the final report states “there is a good case for Local Authorities to consider introducing a Workplace Parking Levy (WPL). In broad terms, this would charge employers for the number of parking spaces they provide to their employees.”

“Closing Motorway Junctions”

In December 2018, Adam Price, the Leader of Plaid Cymru said “Can I suggest a rather neat and exceedingly cheap solution to the whole problem? That's simply to partially close the junction 26 (Malpas) interchange next to the Brynglas Tunnels.”

In December 2015, John Griffiths, the Labour Member of Senedd for Newport East is on record as saying “Closing junctions has always been part of the equation when the issues around the M4 have been discussed.”

Statement from Michael Enea, Conservative Senedd Candidate for Newport West.

“Let’s be clear. A Road User Charge is a vague way of saying Motorway Tolls or Congestion Charging. This is genuinely on the table for the long term. Imagine the traffic chaos on Newport’s A-Roads and side streets if a Motorway Toll was introduced. We need to end this madness now. Let’s get the M4 Relief Road done.”

Statement from Gareth Rhys Hughes, Conservative Senedd Candidate for Newport East.

“A Workplace Parking Levy would be yet another tax on businesses in Wales. Some of proposals made as alternatives to Relief Road over the last 5 to 6 years have been ‘barmy’. We’ve even had politicians suggesting the closure of Motorway Junctions around Newport. They really are clutching at straws. The 2019 Inspectors Report said the only credible solution is to build the M4 Relief Road. We must deliver that Road.”

WE NEED TO END THIS MADNESS

LABOUR CAN NOT BE TRUSTED!

The last time we had a Welsh Election in 2016, Labour promised us an M4 Relief Road. They shamefully broke that promise.

The election before that in 2011, Labour said they didn't foresee the closure of any University campuses. Then, the Caerleon Campus closed. Our University student population in Newport has been decimated.

We can do better than this. Newportonians' deserve more.
