NEWPORT CITY CENTRE MASTERPLAN A DUD!
NEWPORT’S ‘MASTER-PLAN’ LABELLED A SHAMBLES AFTER JUST 20 PEOPLE COMPLETED IT’S PUBLIC CONSULTATION
The ‘Master Plan’ is an important document which outlines the future development and regeneration of Newport’s City Centre over the long-term. The public
are invited to contribute to the document via a consultation.
Llanwern Conservative Councillor Martyn Kellaway wrote to the Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration & Housing questioning the ‘vagueness’ of the
document and difficulties in completing the consultation survey online.
In response, the Cabinet Member replied on the 14th March stating:
“We have received 20 responses to date; whilst the questionnaire was anything but long-winded at only five items, it is recognised that there were technical difficulties with the form that were preventing responses form arriving. This has now been resolved, and an extension of three weeks made to the consultation period as a result ”.
LABOUR MASTERPLAN THIN ON DETAIL AND VAGUE
Cllr Kellaway said “Numerous people have commented on how thin-on-detail the ‘master plan’ actually is. It’s just 8 pages in length and is very vague.
There are questions surrounding the loosely worded titles in the document also. For example, why is Newport’s Indoor Market coming under the bracket
of ‘Office Core Space’? Surely the Council can do better than this”.
POORLY WRITTEN MASTERPLAN WITH NO VISION
St.Julians Conservative Campaigner Michael Enea said “I complained about 4 weeks ago whereby highlighting the technical difficulties in completing the survey. They didn’t even have the common courtesy to reply, yet they obviously took note because they extended the consultation by an extra 3 weeks”.
Mr Enea “The Masterplan itself looks like it’s been drafted by a 10yr old child in a Primary School. It’s just 8 pages in length and the first 4 pages
are merely introductory. The City Centre is grouped into 3 blocks and coloured in. It doesn’t really offer many suggestions on a way forward in
terms of action points. The whole thing is a complete shambles”.

The consultation has been extended by 3 weeks by the Council with the ‘technical difficulties’ rectified. The ‘Masterplan’ however remains the same.
