Car Park Charge at Local Park

City News

NEWPORT COUNCIL TO START CHARGING FOR CAR PARKING AT LOCAL PARKS?

Newport Council have been ‘slammed’ after it has been revealed they will be introducing car parking charges in local Council Parks. These charges will range from £1 up to 2 hours and £3 for up to 5 hours. With a game of bowls costing £4 the parking charges will almost double the cost of a game of bowls per person.

Newport Conservative Chairman Cllr David Fouweather submitted a question on the topic to the Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture & Leisure.

The Council confirmed “The introduction of car parking charges in Belle Vue Park was part of the budget agreed by Council in February, following extensive consultation, and there are no plans to subsidise bowls.”

Cllr David Fouweather said “These parking charges in our parks are not welcome and will hit pensioners and families. There is an active bowling club at Belle Vue park and these charges will almost double the price of a game of bowls. I have received numerous complaints about these charges especially from residents who like to use the park and visit the café. The introduction of these charges is an incredibly spiteful move by the Labour controlled council and I would urge the cabinet member to reconsider his decision to introduce parking charges.”

St.Julians Conservative Activist Michael Enea is a full-time father raising two children. Mr Enea said “Paying to park at your local Council Park is truly disgusting! Families wanting to take their kids for a cheap day out and a picnic in the Park will now have to pay for the privilege? Don’t we already pay for this via Council Tax? I’m outraged to be honest!”

Along with Belle Vue Park, charges had already been introduced at The Wetlands. There are fears parking charges could appear at other Parks such as Tredegar Park, Beechwood and The Glebelands.

LABOUR COUNCIL INTRODUCE SCANDALOUS CAR PARKING FEES!

Newport mother Marie Jermyn (also from St.Julians) said “I visit the Glebelands Park quite often as do many residents in the area. This park has many fields which are used by local rugby and football teams. Will they all have to pay to park? I think this is a really, really bad move.”
